Parent Questionnaires and Feedback

We asked all parents whose children are entitled to free school meals (or have been at any time in the last six years) to tell us what they thought was a supportive way to spend out funding. They felt the following would be a good use of funds:

  • Art therapy
  • Additional adults in class
  • Nurture group
  • Additional 1:1 support
  • An adult who would check on their child's progress every week
  • Lunch club
  • Funding for school trips

Parent Questionnaire October 2016

Many thanks to the 120 parents who completed out parent questionnaire during Parent’s Evening in October. We were very pleased that 100% of parents would recommend the school to other parents and that the vast majority of other answers were positively answered by all but 6 parents.

We were very interested by your comments. All comments were positive and included:

I am very happy to have 3 children at Rowans. I think the school are working really hard to make improvements after the Ofsted report and I fully support them. Thank you

We are really pleased with how well our son is doing here and could not fault the school at all. Keep up the good work.

A couple of parents said:

No homework on the internet due to families not always having it. Get a swimming pool.

Wish there was some more of it (homework)

We will be reviewing our homework policy shortly and will take these comments into account. Unfortunately, a swimming pool, whilst it would be a great thing to have, is beyond our means currently.

6 parents put one negative tick on their questionnaire each. As these questionnaires are anonymous we have no way of identifying the parent but we would be open to discussing this with you. Please give the office a call.

Once again, many thanks for the time parents took to respond to the questionnaire and we are pleased that the school is on the right road.

A Very Happy New Parent

Today we received a lovely email from one of our many new families. What a great start to the new school year:

'I just wanted to take a few minutes to say a huge thank you and how happy I am that we chose Rowans for the kids. I have to say that it has been such a positive experience from the very first phone call, right through to us making it through the first week!

When I started my calls around the various schools in Welwyn Garden City, looking for a place to relocate the kids to, Rowans was the only school who welcomed my request to make an appointment to come and view the school. I was greeted by a very pleasant member of staff on the phone who went out of their way to help me - which was a contrast to some other calls I made that weren’t as welcoming or flexible with my limited availability for viewings. That inital positive start was so important as it gave me a good impression of the school before I had even visited it.
We had two visits to the school before I made my mind up that Rowans was the school for us, both visits were informative, relaxed yet still professional and I left the school feeling that my kids would be nurtured and looked after in a warm caring environment. All the teachers we saw on our walk round stopped to say a genuine hello and they all knew the kids we came into contact with by their first name, there was a natural feel of calmness and happiness around the school.

On the kids 'moving up day' they were both greeted by their names by a few teachers which instantly made them relax, again on their first day we had a lovely welcome from the minute we opened the door.

A week in and I am delighted to say that both the kids are settled, happy and excited about their new life at Rowans. They have been made to feel really welcome by all the staff and the kids and have just slotted in. They go into school happy and come out with big smiles, excited yet calm.

So a HUGE thank you from us all for making this move such a positive one. A special thank you to Mrs Powell who has been very supportive and patient with my endless questions!

Many thanks'

We welcomed Mrs Hudson to Rowans recently. She has made a great start in year one and a parent took the time to email us with this good news:

I was hoping to write a note this morning but time ran away with me!  I just wanted to say that when I asked my son last night how his day was, he couldn't wait to tell me about his Maths lesson.  He said that he had been 'challenged' by Miss Sturmey to add 9 to numbers.  He said it was quite tricky but then learnt a 'cheat'.  He said the tens number goes up and the units goes down.  He said then he flew!  He then explained that 9 was one less than 10 and that is how the cheat worked! It was really sweet how excited he was and I wanted to share it with you.  He has learnt his 9 times table up to 9 x 10 as well so he is really motivated! Thank you so much for stretching him in his Maths whilst making it so much fun!
Miss Sturmey said, ' Ah, how lovely.. This has put a smile on my face : )'
It put a smile on Mrs Reed's face too!

Coral, our maths link governor visited the school this week:

As the Maths Link governor part of my role is to visit to school and look at maths in action in the school. On Wednesday morning Miss Azzopardi showed me round into a few classes to see some of the great ways maths is being taught in our classrooms. It was so good to see the children of different ages really engaged and enjoying their learning and the teachers applying some fantastic new approaches, tools and resources to embedded an understanding of reasoning of maths not just the the numbers. Developing the children's ability to apply maths in the real world. A really insightful morning and great to see.  Thank you to the teachers and children for letting me join your lessons.
