Visit to Mitsubishi electrics

The Eco Team and School Council represented Rowans School where  they went to visit Mitsubishi Electrics to look at how fossil fuels will run out in this country in the next five years and what other renewable sources of energy we can use instead.  The children were great ambassadors for our school and parents were fantastic in supporting us by dropped off and collected the children; Thank you - we couldn't do this without you.

We explored how much energy some of our electrical appliances use and how to be ‘lean, mean and green’ with our energy!

Interesting facts: Did you know that if you leave a tap running when you are brushing your teeth, you use 8 litres of water, and if you only turn the tap on when you want to rinse, you use 1.5 litres. Let’s all turn off the tap and save water!

An X box uses 170w of electricity when it is on and a TV uses 83w. Even on standby, these appliances use 2 / 3w of energy. How many times do we leave our TV or X Box on while we go and eat our dinner? We learnt we should turn it off!

Our central heating uses 57% of our energy bill, water heating uses 25% and lighting / appliances uses 15%. We can reduce this usage by insulating our homes, closing curtains and having double glazing fitted. We had a fantastic trip and learnt lots of really interesting things. We will be setting a whole school challenge after Christmas to see if we can save energy by reducing consumption, use energy efficiently and change our thinking about this topic. Watch this space!
