SEND
Welcome to Waterside!
My name is Mrs Jarrold and I am the SENDCO (Special Educational Needs and Disability Coordinator).
I am a qualified teacher and work out-of-class two and a half days a week (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday morning) supporting teaching staff with regards to provision for our pupils with SEND.
According to the SEND Code of Practice, a child has SEN if they have a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for them. This means they:
- Have a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others at the same age; or
- Have a disability which prevents or hinders them from making use of educational facilities of a kind generally provided for other of the same age in a mainstream school.
In Hertfordshire we have levels of support for children in education according to their needs. The levels start with support in mainstream education and go up through a range of specialist provisions. This is called a ‘Graduated Response’.
The Local Offer, with details of all the SEN and disability services that Hertfordshire offers, can be found at this address:
www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/microsites/local-offer/the-hertfordshire-local-offer.aspx
Hertfordshire SENDIASS is an impartial Special Educational Needs and Disability Information, Advice and Support Service and their website is:
https://www.hertssendiass.org.uk/home.aspx
At Waterside, we also offer a graduated level of support. Children may initially be monitored for SEN and adaptations made to their learning to enable them to make progress. This could then lead on to their being added to the SEN Register and a higher level of ‘reasonable adjustments’ being made and recorded through a termly ADDR document (Assess, Plan, Do, Review). If a child demonstrates a very high level of need, a EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan) may need to be applied for through the Local Authority.

If you have concerns regarding your child’s progress, please speak with the Class Teacher in the first instance. They may then set up a meeting with me in order to discuss potential SEND. I am also contactable via the School Office, or my email : LJ@waterside.herts.sch.uk
