Reception at Waterside Academy
A confident start to school life and a love of learning that lasts
Starting Reception is a significant and exciting milestone in a child’s life. At Waterside Academy, we ensure that this first year of school is a positive, purposeful and enriching experience where children feel confident, capable and ready to learn.
Our Reception class builds on the strong foundations of the Early Years, combining high-quality teaching with a rich, play-based curriculum. Children are supported to grow academically, socially and emotionally, developing the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to thrive as they move through the school.
Our Reception classroom is a vibrant and carefully designed environment where every area is planned with purpose. Children learn through a balance of adult-led teaching and independent exploration, allowing them to develop both key skills and a strong sense of curiosity.
We place a strong emphasis on communication and language, recognising that this underpins all learning. Through structured teaching, high-quality interactions and a language-rich environment, children quickly develop confidence in speaking, listening and expressing their ideas.
Early reading is a central priority. Through our systematic phonics approach, children learn to read with increasing fluency and understanding. Alongside this, we foster a genuine love of books, stories and storytelling.
Mathematics is taught through practical, engaging experiences that develop deep understanding. Children explore number, patterns and problem-solving through hands-on activities that build strong foundations for future learning.
Just as importantly, we prioritise personal development. Children are supported to become independent, resilient and reflective learners who can work with others, manage their feelings and take pride in their achievements.
Each day in Reception is structured to provide both security and variety.
Children take part in focused teaching sessions in phonics, early maths and communication, alongside extended periods of continuous provision where they can apply and deepen their learning through play.
The indoor and outdoor environments are used throughout the day, offering opportunities for creativity, physical development, investigation and collaboration. Whether building, writing, role-playing or exploring the natural world, children are constantly developing new skills and understanding.
Adults play a key role in guiding learning—supporting, challenging and extending children’s thinking at every opportunity.
Our Reception year is carefully designed to prepare children for Year 1 and beyond. By the end of the year, children have developed the essential foundations in reading, writing and mathematics, alongside the confidence and independence needed for the next stage of their education.
We ensure that learning is meaningful and connected, helping children to understand not just what they are learning, but why it matters.
We believe that strong relationships between school and home are key to children’s success.
From the very beginning, we work closely with parents and carers to ensure that every child feels supported and understood. We provide regular updates on children’s learning and development, alongside opportunities for parents to engage with school life and celebrate their child’s progress.
Our open and approachable team is always available to offer support, answer questions and work together with families to ensure the very best outcomes for every child.
We take great care to ensure that children settle quickly and confidently into Reception.
Through transition sessions, meetings with parents and opportunities for children to become familiar with the environment and staff, we build strong relationships before children even begin. For those joining us from our Nursery, this transition is particularly seamless, as children are already confident within the setting.
Our priority is that every child feels safe, happy and ready to learn from their very first day.
