Below is a link to some free online reading books and phonics games that the children might find useful.
Please make sure that your children have a named water bottle in school every day.
PE: Our PE days are Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Phonics
The phonics taught at Waterside is delivered daily, now through our new Twinkl Curriculum (our intent) - we have historically used 'Letters and Sounds' - this is true for phases one through to four; phase five is supplemented using additional materials.
Children are encouraged to read at school regularly and the books they read from are always matched to their current phase of phonological learning.
When the children have 'guided' sessions new sounds, words and more challenging texts are used as their are adults leading the sessions who can question and stretch appropriately.
Geography - Local Walk
As part of our geography learning, we went for a walk around the local area. We looked for signs and symbols in the environment that explained what things might be on a map. We followed a map to find our way back to school as well as explored human and physical features.
Fairytale Land Nativity
All the Fairytale Land characters came together to put on a nativity show. Little Red Riding Hood played the part of Mary, Goldilocks became Gabriel, the Three Little Pigs played the wise men and everyone had to watch out for the innkeeper as it was the big bad wolf! Having learnt all the lines and songs we were pleased to perform it to our adults.
Together at Waterside
As part of our Together at Waterside project, Year 1 learnt about the poet - Christina Rossetti. We read some of her poems, explored how they followed the Golden Rules, performed her poems and created some art work.
No Pens Day Wednesday
During No Pens Day Wednesday, Year 1 developed their speaking and listening skills as well as finding other ways to learn that didn't involve writing. In maths, we matched the spots on the dominoes, practised subitising using the dominoes and cards as well as counting. In English, we took part in a drama workshop. We flew off to space and learnt the names of the different planets. We acted out what it was like to be on each planet. In relation to our Dear Zoo learning, we created artwork based on the different animals within the story.
